At their October 6, 2026 board meeting the Brownsville Independent School District trustees, facing a $28,000,000 deficit on their self-funded health plan, approved a one-year extension to make it worse.

“Does anyone know what this is going to cost?” asked a board member. After the sound of crickets faded among deer-in-the-headlights staff members the stunning revelation was “We are starting off with a $28,000,000 deficit.”
In a follow up question a board member asked “Did we try to negotiate that cost down?” Negotiating claims that have already been paid is tough.
Another board member wants the district to become their own third party administrator so they can pay every claim whether covered or not so “people don’t die!”
