We’re Ok Because Everyone Else Is Not OK Too (There’s Plan C Just In Case)

“The Butler didn’t do it! But maybe he can fix it. Call him in NOW!Sherlock Holmes says to Watson. “You mean Josh? Josh Butler?” replies Watson

The Amarillo Independent School District believes in magic. “Let’s change the logo on our health insurance card, that should solve our problem!”

When that didn’t work they went to Plan B. “Lets raise the deductible and out-of-pocket plan maximum, and make a few other benefit reductions! That will surely work!

Then there’s Plan C if needed.

Watch district educators as they digest the news of another hit to their take home pay here – AISD board approves medical insurance premium increase.

Josh Butler, an Amarillo taxpayer and an out-of-the-box kind of insurance advisor who has saved his many West Texas clients millions in health care expenses writes:

In 2023, Amarillo ISD made sweeping changes to their medical plan, hiring a new TPA, PBM, stop loss carrier, new networks….etc.

Earlier this week the School Board unanimously approved a 16% premium increase on both plans they offer, and a 50% increase in employee out of pocket responsibility on the plan 70% of employees are on. They were proposing a 33% increase.

Even with this 16% increase on teachers, the District is projecting a $5.2mm deficit in their health plan next year, which indicates more increases are coming unless some changes are made.

AISD stated that if premiums weren’t raised, in two years the district would be forced into TRS Active Care... 🙄 (PLAN C)

Meanwhile, Butler’s High Plains Health Plans are seeing flat or very small renewals, an average of 22% reduction in total cost, all while offering $0 deductibles and copays for thousands of services including all generic prescriptions.
