Back in the day health insurance didn’t finance loan free loss, it reimbursed loss.
Remember the old days when health plans reimbursed plan members for prescription drugs instead of providing point-of-sale financing?
Envision an encounter at the pharmacy cash register going something like this:
Patient: IT COSTS HOW MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
PHARMACIST: $750
Patient: NO WAY! THAT’S HIGHWAY ROBBERY!
PHARMACIST: Blame your doctor, not me. He’s the one who prescribed it!
Patient: ISN’T THERE A CHEAPER MEDICINE!
PHARMACIST: Yes, it’s $22 but I can’t prescribe it, I’m not a doctor
Patient: HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS! I LOVE MY DOCTOR BUT HE’S NOT LOOKING AFTER MY FINANCIAL HEALTH! HOW CAN I GET THAT $22 DRUG?
PHARMACIST: I’ll call your doctor and ask if we can dispense the $22 drug instead.
