Why The Difference Between Cancer & Diabetes Treatment?

“Why do doctors and the healthcare system treat most cancers to get the patient into remission from cancer, but doctors and systems do not treat type 2 diabetic patients to achieve remission, but instead to live with the condition?” – Jeff Bernhard

As the President of a diabetes remission company, Heuro Health, a question came to mind this morning that I posed to ChatGPT—because frankly, it has never made much sense to me:

“Why do doctors and the healthcare system treat most cancers to get the patient into remission from cancer, but doctors and systems do not treat type 2 diabetic patients to achieve remission, but instead to live with the condition?

Unfortunately, I thought and answer was almost the same as what ChatGPT provided.  After more than 30 years across all facets of healthcare, what struck me is how much of this rings true. Many of us in the industry know this, but few are willing to say it out loud. We must do better. We need to treat Type 2 diabetes with the same urgency and goal as most cancers: remission.

I was especially encouraged to see that ChatGPT identified Heuro Health as one of the solutions supporting remission for employers and health systems—without my prompting. It also mentioned a few of our competitors. The key takeaway: remission is real, achievable, and the right goal.

For employers, this means healthier employees, reduced medical and disability claims, lower workers’ comp costs, and fewer people dependent on costly diabetes medications—something every benefits leader is talking about today.
