Bill Rusteberg – 3rd Grade (first row, left) : What’s a MRF?
Phil Harrison : Hi William – MRF’s = Machine-readable files (MRFs) – we throw acronyms around in healthcare like there’s no tomorrow.
Specifics – two types:
Payer MRF contain negotiated rates for every provider in-network:
* CPT/HCPCS codes (the billing codes for services)
* Allowed amounts (what insurers actually pay)
* Provider identifiers (TINs, NPIs)
* Sometimes historical allowed amounts
Hospital MRFs contain:
* Gross charges (sticker price)
* Discounted cash prices
* Payer-specific negotiated rates
* Minimum & maximum negotiated rates
We can finally share pricing with consumers before they schedule services + many more use cases.
