What Happened To $0 Tariffs on Drug Importation?

“We thought we were in the clear with 0% tariffs, and now a month later they come back and actually start implementing IEEPA tariffs without notice…”

Hi all, Please see attached form letter as a starting point for your customer’s to send to their reps. We thought we were in the clear with 0% tariffs, and now a month later they come back and actually start implementing IEEPA tariffs without notice… very hard to swallow.  Regards, Phil Bancroft – Med Services – Phone: 434-229-5380

Dear Senator (or Representative) XXXXXX:

I am writing this letter to express my extreme dismay over the repeal of the “de minimis exception” from duties, taxes, for low-value imported goods. This exemption, previously allowing goods valued at $800 or less to enter duty-free, is being phased out, with a complete end date for most countries set for August 29, 2025. While I am sure that there are many good reasons that repeal of this exception is good; let me provide a practical example of why it is bad.

I am a senior citizen that relies on drugs imported from Canada, the UK, and India to survive.  I do this because the drug prices in the US are simply not affordable to people like me.  While I understand that this action is being taken to stop the drug cartels; this action will not likely do so.  It will simply raise prices for those illegal drugs – which the cartels can afford.  I cannot.

Please intervene on behalf of your senior constituents; and ensure that a pharmaceutical exemption remains in place until a substitute process is in place.  That said I honestly can’t understand why the government cares if someone chooses to by maple syrup from Canada either.  The proposed tariffs create a hardship to real people (individuals), who according to my understanding, were not supposed to be paying any new tariffs.   If and when drug prices can come down in the United States, that would be welcome, but individual citizens should not be used as pawns nor punished by paying higher drug prices while the government works to lower them.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
