UnitedHealthcare is awarding $2.5 million in grants to 10 community-based organizations in Texas to expand access to care and address issues like food insecurity for uninsured individuals and underserved communities.

The funding will go to organizations that address social determinants, which are nonmedical issues, such as food, housing, transportation and the financial means to pay for basic daily needs. These factors influence about 80 percent of a person’s physical health, according to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

In total, UnitedHealthcare is donating $11 million in grants spread across 11 states.
