TrumpRx just launched, so it’s time for Donald Trump vs Mark Cuban on drug prices. Let’s take Protonix, one of the 43 meds being offered on TrumpRx. It’s $200 at TrumpRx. Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs will sell the same med, same dosage, same strength for $6.
What are we even doing here?
Look, I’m on the record in support of the idea that direct-to-patient programs have a role to play in the health care system, filling some of the gaps of poor insurance coverage. I wrote a whole Health Affairs thing on it. But passing off brand-name drugs as a great deal when there are generic alternatives doesn’t solve the affordability problem.
(I’m cherry-picking a bit by picking Protonix, which has a generic. The calculus is different for meds that haven’t lost exclusivity. Still … About half of the meds now listed on TrumpRx have some sort of generic on the market. Buyer beware.)
