Texas- Stop Loss Regulations to be Dropped
- Two well-placed sources in Austin report that the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) has decided to drop the pursuit of stop loss regulation.
- Regulations exposed for public comment late last Fall would have instituted the general framework of the NAIC Stop Loss Model Act, prohibited lasering and required carrier disclosure forms.
- SIIA filed a comment letter questioning the need to regulate the product in the absence of any consumer complaints or demonstrated consumer harm.
- SIIA lobbyists and several members attended meetings with the TDI and governor’s office to express concern about the proposed regulations and educate policymakers on the product.
- This policy achievement was largely due to effective coalition building, swift action and working with public officials who were willing to ask questions and listen to the entities that they regulate.
