Texas Legislature Wants To Know If There Is Something Better Than TRS ActiveCare

In the last Texas legislative session SB1444 was passed requiring each regional service center to poll all districts within their service area to determine if TRS ActiveCare members are happy or unhappy with their crappy and expensive health insurance benefits.

_____ Yes, I’m happy with my crappy and expensive health insurance

_____ No, I’m unhappy with my crappy and expensive health insurance

Additionally, SB1444 requires each regional service center, in partnership with their respective member districts within their service area, to “assess three alternative health coverage options that are available on the open market or through self-funding of school district health care expenses including…………..whether, in obtaining the alternative, some or all of the districts in the region should jointly seek health coverage under that alternative as a group.”

The Texas legislature wants to know if there is better coverage and lower rates available in the open market that beats the TRS ActiveCare government health plan.

_____ No, there’s nothing in the open market that beats our crappy & expensive TRS ActiveCare health plan

_____ Yes, there’s a lot of plans out in the open market that provides better crappy and expensive benefits than our crappy & expensive TRS ActiveCare government health plan

SB1444 provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for insurance brokers, carriers and third party administrators. They would be wise to reach out proactively to each regional service center to make them aware of their commercial health plan option/s with an eye towards consideration as one of three alternative options regional service centers are tasked to vet and report to the Texas legislature by November 2022 deadline.
