There’s a stop sign in Victoria, Texas that commands enforcement to all who approach. So, what else is new? There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of stop signs in Victoria.
This one is different.
It’s out in the middle of nowhere. One can see for hundreds of yards in either direction with nothing obstructing one’s view. The sign is not at a crossroad, it’s simply there for no rhyme or reason. An idiot in planning had it placed there and no one has ever questioned it.
I travel that road frequently and I am continuously amazed to see vehicles invariably stop even though there is no rational reason to do so. Drivers are so deeply conditioned to obey traffic signs they do so without thought or hesitation every single time.
“There must be a reason it’s there, so I stop. If I don’t and get caught government will punish me with a fine I can’t afford to pay” says Joe Lemming. “My driving record is perfect!”
Blind obedience often overrides common sense, reason and logic. It’s powerful and exploitable.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is in many ways similar to that stop sign in Victoria, Texas. The federal “Planning and Zoning Commission” (Congress) placed it in every town, village, city, county, state from east to west, north to south with the mandate all must obey.
While intentions may be good unintended consequences can dictate otherwise and often does as has become evident under the ACA.
Few don’t stop at that stop sign in Victoria. Few don’t abide by the ACA. In both instances common sense, reason and logic is overshadowed by something far greater. Fear.
Civil disobedience lead by leaders without fear can be a corrective and powerful antidote to removing stop signs that make no sense.
