Off The Record

By Bill Rusteberg

While visiting Washington DC last year on business, I ended each day with a short visit to Off The Record, a bar located at the Hay Adams Hotel across the street from the White House. This place is always packed with interesting people and I had occasion to meet a few of them.

Sitting at the bar one evening I struck up a conversation with a fellow to my left. His name was Johnathon Moulton, son of the late R.E. Moulton, one of the nation’s leading stop loss insurance intermediaries of his time. I knew his father back in the day. To the right of me was Mike………………

(The following can be found on Mike’s and Johnathon’s respective web sites)

Michael J. Krupin, CLU, has ranked among the top 1% of life insurance producers for the majority of his career, spanning over 40 years. His success through the years results from his commitment to always represent the client, never the carrier, and to remain independent, consistent, trustworthy, flexible and enthusiastic. As a result of this philosophy, Michael attracts clients including the nation’s leading A-list individuals in entertainment, sports, business and healthcare, and has handled cases worth over $100 million.

An entrepreneur at heart, Michael left insurance carrier Provident Mutual (now Nationwide Insurance), where he was a top producer, to form Krupin Associates in Richmond, Virginia in 1980. He quickly built a substantial practice that realized over $2 billion in life insurance policies in a short time period. Michael and his son, Bryan, moved to Beverly Hills in 1996 to form Gilbert-Krupin. In 2012, Michael, Bryan and Ashley Krupin formed Krupin Partners to continue to serve clients throughout the country from the firm’s Beverly Hills, Richmond and New York offices.

A highly-sought speaker with an interest in fostering the next generation of insurance and estate planning professionals, Michael regularly leads discussions for the nation’s top law firms, business managers and financial advisors on the nuances of utilizing life insurance for wealth management. Well-regarded in professional and community circles, Michael’s recognition and involvement includes:

  • American Diabetes Association, “Father of the Year,” 2008
  • National Association of Financial Advisors (NAIFA), member
  • Advanced Association of Life Underwriters (AALU), member
  • Million Dollar Roundtable (MDRT), member
  • Top of the Table (TOT), qualifying member annually since 1980
  • National Association of Life Underwriters, “National Quality Award,” multiple years
  • Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), American College, 1975
  • International Association of Registered Financial Planners, 1987

In 2006, Michael and his wife, Marti, along with their children formed the Krupin Family Foundation to support programs for education, children’s cancer and healthcare. Among its other gifts, the Foundation has contributed $1 million for a new gymnasium at Michael’s Alma Mater, Hampden-Sydney College. Michael and Marti split their time between Beverly Hills, California, and Richmond, Virginia.

“I believe that if you follow your passion, positive energy will lead to success in the workplace and strong relationships in and outside of the office.  Fortunately, I found my passions early in life.  I still wake up at 5 a.m. every day, looking forward to resolving my clients’ life insurance and estate planning challenges.  Business is better than ever, working together with my two children.”
Michael J. Krupin

Note: When  I asked Mike if he was bigger and better than Ben Feldman, he said “YES, I’M BIGGER AND BETTER!” That’s a clear indication the man has self confidence. As Dizzy Dean once said, “It ain’t bragging it it’s true!”

Jonathan Moulton

Jonathan has been involved with insurance his entire life. A third generation life agent, he began his career with R.E. Moulton, Inc. in 1999. R.E. Moulton’s founder, Rey Moulton (his father), co-founded the concept of employer stop loss insurance in 1976. RE Moulton pioneered and led the industry through 2004 when his father sold his business (REM), to American United Life Insurance Company. Jonathan worked with his father to help grow REM into the largest privately owned managing general underwriter (MGU) in the country. REM underwrote stop loss, group life, LTD, and STD predominantly for Safeco before branching out to Transamerica, ING, AUL, and many more.

Jonathan’s experience at REM taught him a variety of skills from underwriting to sales to reinsurance treaties. He took on significant responsibilities as the sales and service representative for a portion of the SE region, including FL, AL, MS, NC, and SC. Jonathan worked with employee benefit consultants, brokers, and third party administrators, leading the company in group life sales.

Following the sale of REM, Jonathan continued to focus on personal production in life and annuity sales, resulting in over $10m in target life premium alone, in just a handful of years. His life insurance expertise includes simplified issue term insurance, jumbo foreign national cases, impaired risk, buy/sell, key man, large cased design, IUL/whole life premium finance, tax free income, pension planning and advanced tax planning. His annuity experience includes MYGAs, SPIAs, FIAs, guaranteed lifetime income and complex annuity laddering.

A deep knowledge base coupled with strong carrier/partner relationships, a high level of responsive service, and thoughtful execution allows his producers to be highly successful with his support and the support of his team at Edison Risk.

Jonathan continues to give back to his community as well as the insurance industry. He is an active member of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, AALU, NAILBA, and sits on NAIFA of the Palm Beaches Board of Directors.
