Juanito “The Health Insurance Broker”

Juanito just got started in the business and is doing great.

Years ago while flying on Braniff Airlines I reached into the seat pocket in front of me and pulled out the airline’s flight magazine. I’ll never forget the lead article as it made a big impression on me at the time.

According to the article there are two ways to become a millionaire – Selling real estate and insurance. No inventory, no college degree necessary, just hard work and a lot of energy.

Next to the article, on a facing page, was a full-page advertisement with the picture of two men. I recognized both immediately. They were Corky Pearson and David Day, life insurance agents from Harlingen, Texas where I lived at the time. Both were among the most successful life insurance brokers in the country, earning millions year after year. They weren’t selling life insurance per se, they were selling estate tax insurance.

Years later another insurance agent from Harlingen sold a voluntary benefits package through Colonial Life Insurance Company to over 20,000 employees of Southwest Airlines.

I know quite a few insurance agent millionaires I’ve met over the years. One is an immigrant from Mexico who came over with nothing. What do they all have in common? Strong self-motivation, rugged individualism and fear of failure drives their success.

Congratulations Juanito! You’re on you way!

FROM ONE OF OUR THREE READERS:

“Strong self-motivation, rugged individualism and fear of failure drives their success” . . . you hit the nail on the head. My version of Juanito was my nephew. He was starting left guard at U of Pitt in early 70’s. Graduated and unloaded trucks for a year, then started as agent for Equitable Life and now counting his money. Solid, down to earth guy, well respected in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for sharing the story. BTW, if you remember Braniff, you’re probably 50 year old, maybe more. I remember flying Braniff.
