“A staggering 85% of people using GLP-1s primarily for weight loss stopped within two years. And almost all regained the weight.”
“It’s like being on crack!”
Her words caught me off guard. Seeing my expression, she quickly clarified:
“Well, maybe not crack—I’ve never used it. But getting off Wegovy has been a nightmare. I loved feeling slimmer, healthier, and more confident in my clothes. But every time I stopped, the weight piled back on.”
Doctors will recognize this familiar conversation about GLP-1 medications. Curious about the bigger picture, I reviewed a study (See study HERE) that surveyed over 120,000 individuals classified as overweight or having obesity.
The results? A staggering 85% of people using GLP-1s primarily for weight loss stopped within two years. And almost all regained the weight.
This patient had self-funded her treatment—thousands of pounds spent, and now faced with the fear of gaining it all back. What shocked me most? She had obtained the drug from a UK supermarket pharmacy with no behavior modification program to help her sustain weight loss.
I suspect she’s not alone. Are we on the brink of a GLP-1 backlash? How else can we support patients?

So………….GLP-1 drugs don’t work for long term weight loss? Then why waste the money? Oh wait! When it’s other people’s money it doesn’t matter…………
