Is Employer Managed Health Care Even Worth It?

“I don’t think the amount you save on tax free healthcare is greater than not overpaying on unit cost.  Benefit advisors need to be doing this math to measure if an employer managing healthcare cost is even worth it.”  Leon Wisniewski

“Worth it? No, not in most cases” says Don Pedro (pictured above with hat on). “An employer’s idea of managing health care costs is to pass it onto plan members in the form of higher deductibles, copays, coinsurance coupled with narrow benefits and less choice while overpaying for all of it at the same time.”

“Overpaying for health care? “asks Juanito. “You mean, like mi abuela paying $35,000 for an ER visit followed by a two day overnight stay with one hour in the OR the following day to remove one kidney stone costing $175,000? I didn’t know kidney stones were worth that much. I’m donating mine to you guys when I pass. Have a few on me boys!”

“Why wait Juanito? Let’s enjoy our new found wealth now!” says Enrique (pictured to the left of Don Pedro in the picture above). “It’s the only right thing to do!”

“Managing cost must always be measured no matter what industry you’re in. It’s your turn Mario” says Valde, the man to Don Pedro’s right.

“Juanito tiene cojones!” was whispered throughout the parlor as a crowd of pachucos gathered outside. “We have stones too” they chanted in English “Our family jewels are worth more than we thought! Let’s celebrate our good fortune!”
