Patients qualifying for free care from one hospital might receive painful bills and lawsuits from another.

Below are guidelines for free care at health systems affiliated with members of the American Hospital Association board.

Free care for families of four making under:

$103,000 (400% federal poverty level)   Stanford Health Care

$64,375 (250% FPL)        Henry Ford Health System, Trinity Health, Yale Health

$51,500 (200% FPL)        Alameda Health System, Allegheny Health Network, Atlantic Health System, Baylor Scott & White, Health Carilion Clinic, Central Maine Healthcare, Genesis Health System, Guadalupe County Hospital, HCA HealthONE, Intermountain Healthcare, Kalispell Regional Healthcare, LifePoint Health

$38,625 (150% FPL)        Altru Health System, Northern Light Health

$34,248 (133% FPL)        Saint Luke’s Health System Kansas City

$32,188 (125% FPL)        WellStar Health System

$25,750 (100% FPL)        Grady Health System, White Plains Hospital Center
