The South Texas Health Cooperative (STHC) in deep South Texas provides affordable health insurance to member school districts since 1998. Through careful risk management and a lot of hard work the STHC risk pool has achieved remarkable success.
Twenty six years ago a few small South Texas school districts banded together to solve health care. The results have been exceptional: Static rates (no rate increase in the past decade and a half), no reduction in benefits, broad coverage.
The STHC is a prime candidate for Ripley’s Believe If Or Not and the Guinness World Book of Records.
Surrounding districts haven’t been as fortunate. Their members go to the same hospitals and doctors as do members of the STHC. Yet their costs are double and their benefits are less.
How is that even possible? And why isn’t every school district adopting their model?
Those two questions are really very easy to answer but few will listen and those that do will take no action. Such is the reality of the pervasive cult mentality to which a cure is perceived as more painful than the pain of continuing status quo health plan strategies incorporating double digit rates increases every years and cost shifting to the backs of underpaid workers tasked with the most important job in our country – educating our children.
Business is about solving other people’s problems. Solving the high cost of healthcare giving employers a competitive advantage is ours.
Status quo convergent thinking solves problems through a very narrow lens. Divergent thinking empowers us to solve problems with a wide lens allowing us to see what others don’t.
