Healthcare Smart Card

The rising cost of medical care and lack of access to health financing options is adversely affecting the lives of poor household in India.

Public spending on health in the country is one of the lowest globally, putting a sustainable strain on household budgets.

Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) has been able to provide basic hospitalisation cover to about 30 million people living below the poverty line. Yet, there is a significant out of pocket expenditure for outpatient services and more often these services are not reaching the poor rural households.

This project by Pompy Sridhar attempts to reach outpatient healthcare services to rural and below the poverty line households of India by subscribing to RSBY using the smart card technology. Outpatient and comprehensive healthcare will now be provided using a biometric smart card at rural clinics using computer and mobile-based applications that help to authenticate the beneficiary and administer entitlements.
