Attention Employers, Give Me Your Poor, Your Tired, Your Huddled Employee Masses………….
Attention Nueces County residents! You may qualify for free or near free hospital care courtesy of your local, non-tax paying, not-for-profit hospital system.
In return for legally avoiding paying millions and millions of dollars in taxes, federal law requires something in return………..free or near free health care for residents that meet certain financial requirements. Most Nueces County residents who, unlike non-profit hospitals, pay taxes under threat of punishment and ruin if they don’t, have no idea financial assistance is available. Their ignorance is the hospital’s advantage.
Most Nueces County employer sponsored health plans also suffer from informational ignorance. No one has informed them they can incorporate IRC 501r language in their Plan Document as a significant taxpayer supported risk transfer strategy.
Nueces County with a population of about 350,000 residents has a median household income of $56,406 per year which equals 271% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). That’s good news for many Nueces County families as politically defined poverty has it’s advantages in modern day America.
According to the Christus Health Financial Assistance Policy residents earning 300% FPL are eligible for financial assistance while those earning more than that may be eligible too. How generous is that!
“CHRISTUS Health is a Catholic, faith-based, non-profit health care system dedicated to improving the health of the people in the communities it serves. Because of this, CHRISTUS Health has a policy in place to provide care for patients in need of financial assistance. Patients with family incomes at or below 300 percent of applicable federal poverty guidelines are eligible for charity care. In addition, patients with significant medical bills and income above 300 percent of applicable federal poverty guidelines may be eligible for charity care as well. To qualify for charity care, you will need to apply for financial assistance and provide proof of income.”

“Screw health insurance. It’s too expensive!” says John, a county employee. “I can’t afford it so I dropped it. I’m saving over $10,000 a year. Why pay for insurance I may never use when I can get free hospital care when I need it and I can subscribe to direct primary care for my entire family for a lot less than a car payment.”
John has saved the equivalent of three car payments, more than enough for the bass boat he’s wanted for years, and still leaving money left over for his kid’s college savings account.
