GoodRx Files To Go Public

GoodRx, a digital health startup that helps users track prescription drug prices, filed for an IPO on Friday. The company hasn’t yet priced its shares, but plans to be listed on Nasdaq as “GDRX.”

In the deluge of digital health companies preparing to go public this summer, another one joined the ranks. GoodRx, a startup that helps users track the price of prescription and negotiates cash pay discounts with pharmacies, filed for an IPO on Friday.

The company expects to raise roughly $100 million in the offering, though it has not yet set a price range for its stock. It plans to be traded on Nasdaq under the ticker “GDRX.”

At the beginning of the month, Reuters reported that GoodRx was preparing for an IPO, with a listing that could take place this year or in early 2021.

Co-founders and co-CEOs Doug Hirsch and Trevor Bezdek started the company in 2011, after Hirsch found out a prescription would cost him $400 at his pharmacy, with insurance. Since then, the company has ballooned to 4.9 million monthly active users who use it to compare pharmacy prices and, in some cases, get a coupon for a discount.

Most of the company’s revenue, roughly 97%,  comes from fees GoodRx collects from pharmacy benefit managers when consumers use a GoodRx code to fill a prescription. Last year, GoodRx reported revenues of $388.22 million, up 55% from 2018.  Its net income, at $66.05 million in 2019, was up 50% from the previous year — a rarity among the companies that have filed to go public so far this year.


Payers have a greater role to play to help members navigate the Covid-19 public health crisis and their future healthcare, according to a new report.

In the first half of 2020, GoodRx brought in $256.7 million in revenue and $54.68 million in profit.

Though prescription coupons make up most of GoodRx’s business, the startup also has a telehealth platform and a subscription model. For the latter, subscribers pay a $6 monthly fee for lower prices in some pharmacies. GoodRx also recently added a mail order option for subscribers.

Last year, the startup acquired telehealth platform HeyDoctor, which it expects will continue to grow in the future. That said, the marketplace for telehealth is competitive, with Teladoc, Amwell, MDLive and several others vying for market share. It also brings in much lower margins than GoodRx’s prescription discount business.


Bill, I am beginning to investigate dropping a PBM for a group altogether and just providing the employees with a GoodRX card.  I have done that for my own individual plan and I’m saving a ton.  The load for pharmaceutical is now ~22%.  When I buy my RX now via GoodRX or Blink Health on line, even though I am paying the full cost I pay less than my co-pay when I was with United Health’s small group plan.

 It can be as simple as asking each employee to key in their own scripts into the two or three most popular discount programs to see what they can buy for.  I think 19 out of 20 scripts are significantly discounted with GoodRX, BlinkHealth, or SingleCare.  If the EEs save money buying themselves VS their co-pays and OOPs, it’s a no brainer.  There will be an anomaly or two and you’ll have to determine how to deal with those issues plus future RX anomalies.

I bounced the idea off of a 300 man group I consult in Boston and it was very favorably accepted.  Once a few companies do it, the concept will take hold and grow quickly.
