Changing Behavior Doesn’t Lower Health Care Costs Because We Love Grandma

Grandma smiles devilishly while preparing toxic dish

“Lets put in a Wellness Plan!” says Linda in HR. “Our employees will become healthier! Healthier employees need less medical care and less medical care means lower health care costs!”

Will Jose give up grandma’s enchilada recipe in favor of asparagus? How do you tell Jose his grandmother has been trying to kill him all these years?

Not going to happen.

“Ok, that didn’t work, let’s try changing doctor behavior instead!” says Linda. “I’ve heard value based care saves money by doctors doing less and when doctors do less costs go down!

How do you convince doctors to change behavior by providing value-based care in return for bonuses that must be earned by a fundamental change in work habit for outcomes that are going happen anyway?

Not going to happen.

“OK!” screams Linda. “Lets tell the insurance company to pay less. That will save us money!”

Ahhh…………Linda is on to something.
