Hawaii considers ban on cigarette sales except for centenarians…………………..
Hawaii considers ban on cigarette sales. Gray Hall reports during Action News at 7 a.m. on February 3, 2019.
Hawaii is flirting with the idea of becoming the first state to ban the sale of cigarettes.
Lawmakers are proposing that cigarette sales would effectively end by 2024.
The ban would go into effect progressively, starting next year, by raising the minimum age for buying cigarettes from 21 to 30.
Two years later, no one under 100 would be allowed to buy cigarettes.
Meanwhile the debate on making marijuana legal continues…………………………
NOTE: Hawai’i is home to the greatest number of centenarians per capita–about 300 in all–in the United States (www.honolulumagazine.com/Honolulu-Magazine/March-2006/Among-The-Centenarians/ ) We are told thirty-five are smokers, twenty-two are chewers, and five are trying to quit. Of the remaining, 14% are considering taking up the habit as long as it doesn’t interfere with their whiskey and tequila budget.
