Aetna To Acquire Prodigy Health Group, Nation’s Largest Independent TPA

AETNA NEWS RELEASE: We’re pleased to announce that we are broadening our capabilities to better meet the needs of a broad range of customers. We have agreed to acquire Prodigy Health Group, the nation’s largest independent TPA.

With this move, Aetna will expand our ability to provide alternative products for small and mid-sized self-funded plan sponsors. Prodigy’s capabilities also will help us establish accountable care networks, which will benefit Aetna’s customers.

Prodigy operates under three brand names:

  • Meritain Health, the nation’s largest independent TPA
  • American Health medical management business
  • Scrip World pharmacy benefits management business

Prodigy offers customized options such as networks, service models, products and care management programs that appeal to certain self-funded customers. With this TPA capability, Aetna will be able to offer new product alternatives for self-funded customers looking for a lower-cost program that meets their needs.

We’ll also use Prodigy’s low-cost, flexible platform to gain and service accountable care organization (ACO) customers. Prodigy offers value-priced and easily implementable services required by ACO players.

Prodigy will continue to provide its customers and their brokers and consultants with the same valuable products and services it does today. We also look forward to enhancing these offerings.

Upon closing, Prodigy will operate as a separate business within Aetna. We expect to maintain Prodigy’s existing leadership structure and brands. At the same time, Prodigy and its customers will benefit from the natural synergy of combining Prodigy’s low-cost administrative platform and network with Aetna’s strong network capabilities and portfolio of ancillary products
