Feds give approval for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to double in size

EDINBURG — Federal officials have granted a request by Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to double its size, which would make it the largest hospital in the Rio Grande Valley, according to a news release Wednesday evening.

DHR will go from 551 rooms to 1,102 rooms after the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved a request from the hospital that was submitted in January, according to the release.

The request from the hospital was made because changes made by the Affordable Care Act of 2010 required federal permission for doctors-owned hospitals to increase in size. The hospital had to show a need for additional rooms and beds in order to have the request approved, according to the release.

“Our growth is as much a story of the Rio Grande Valley as it is the story of our hospital. We are growing with the community and DHR’s vision goes beyond healthcare,” Dr. Carlos Cardenas, DHR Chairman of the Board said in a prepared statement.

“It’s in economic development, expanding educational opportunities for our youth. Our vision entails each aspect of every major pillar it takes to build a great community. We’re trying to grow so we can bring services to a community that is deserving of them.”

The expansion includes a new multilevel medical tower that will house intensive care units for surgical, cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and orthopedic patients, the release states.

The hospital also plans to add more than 18 new operating rooms, expand its emergency rooms by as many as 80 beds and a heliport to grow into a level one trauma center, according to the release
