The Brownsville Independent School District, the largest employer south of San Antonio, voted yesterday to terminate TPA services through BCBS and enter into a TPA agreement with United Healthcare.

Citing continuing escalating medical costs of $2-3 million per year, the Board of Trustees expressed frustration in controlling health care costs.

“We are hiring a manager to help us control claim costs” said one trustee. “We will hold them accountable.”

Editor’s Note: BISD will not be successful in controlling health care costs until they realize that the best method to reign in and lower costs is to enter into direct provider contracts that provide for fair and transparent reimbursement.

Local health care providers will compete for business if given the opportunity.
